Tom Blake
recently retired as a Paramedic Firefighter from
the City of South Portland Fire Department after
a 27-year career. He is also the Director for
the Middle School & High School Track and Field
Conference and has coached the UNUM track team
for 22 years. Tom is the only coach to be
inducted into the United States Corporate
Athletics Association Hall of Fame. Tom holds a
BS in History and a MS in Education, both from
the University of Southern Maine. Tom is a
lifetime resident of South Portland and has
lived in only two houses. He was the first
President of the South Portland Land Trust and
served a second stint from 2005-07 while serving
on its board member since its inception. Mr.
Blake was elected to a City Council at-large
seat in 2007 and continues to strive for open
space preservation, interconnecting trails and
public access. The SPLT is grateful for Mr.
Blake's continued involvement on its board.

Steve Jocher
traveled in 45 states and 13 countries before
discovering Maine and settling in South Portland
in 1991. He has two bachelor’s degrees and a
master’s in management. Currently, he is the
Environmental, Health, Safety and Security
Manager for an acrylic manufacturer. Looking
for creative ways to improve workplace wellness,
Mr. Jocher’s projects included designing and
building a wooded trail system on an employer’s
property. He is the chair of the South
Portland Land Trust Governance Committee and
serves on the USM School of Applied Science
Advisory Board and the Maine DEP Environmental
Leader Steering Committee. Mr. Jocher enjoys
many various aspects of the outdoors and is
committed to protecting open space for the
community and future generations.

Lisa Kubiak is a Paralegal at Bernstein, Shur,
Sawyer & Nelson, working with the Business
Restructuring and Insolvency Group. She has
been a Paralegal for 20 years in and around
Portland, with experience in Real Estate,
Litigation, Municipal and Family law. Ms.
Kubiak was born and raised in Michigan, where
she developed a love of the outdoors from her
long-time involvement with Girl Scouts. Lisa
Kubiak holds a Bachelors of Science Degree in
Forestry from Michigan State University. She
has resided in South Portland since 1994 and has
volunteered her time to numerous political
candidates, including Senator Lynn Bromley (as
campaign treasurer since 2000). Lisa Kubiak
looks forward to devoting those volunteer hours
to the South Portland Land Trust, due in part to
its assistance in helping to preserve the Sawyer
Marsh.
Mary Linneman

Mary Linneman has
been a teacher in the Portland area for over
twenty five years. She came to Maine from
Buffalo, New York to teach at the Baxter School
for the Deaf, and later made the switch to
teaching middle and elementary grades in public
school. Ms. Linneman has worked as an
interpreter for the deaf, a Cooperative
Extension volunteer on the Harvey Gamage,
and briefly as a docent for Portland Landmarks.
She is a graduate of Binghamton University and
Canisius College. Ms. Linneman has a strong
interest in local history and land preservation.
As a resident of South Portland for the past ten
years, she figures it’s about time to put that
interest to use in helping to preserve the
resources of South Portland for generations to
come.

Terry Morrison
has been General Manager of Bagel Works for 6
years. Prior to that, he spent 5 years as
Assistant Manager at various retail
establishments. He is also very active in
political campaigns, campaign training, and
lobbying. Mr. Morrison studied business
administration at Husson College.Terry Morrison
is a lifetime resident of Maine. He moved to
South Portland in 2005. Mr. Morrison hopes that
through his involvement with the SPLT, he can
contribute to the greenbelt expansion and ensure
a delicate blend of growth and open space. The
SPLT is thrilled to welcome Mr. Morrison to the
board.

Richard Rottkov
is an adjunct English professor at Southern
Maine Community College. Prior to that, he was
a high school social studies teacher for 10
years, public relations director of the U.S.
Soccer
Federation for 5 years, and an editor and
reporter with both major wire services and with
newspapers for
5 years. He earned his B.A. at the University of
Vermont, majoring in Communications and History,
and has as Master's Degree in Communications
from New York University. Mr. Rottkov moved to
South Portland in 2002. His focus while working
with the SPLT is to help in the protection,
preservation and enjoyment of open space. He is
the Vice President of the Land Trust, and
previously served as Secretary. Mr. Rottkov is
Chair of the West End Trails Planning/Action
Subcommittee, a member of the fundraising and
high school environmental club subcommittees,
and is Co-Chair of the annual plant sale
fundraiser. In addition, Mr. Rottkov is Chair
of the South Portland Democratic City Committee,
part of the South Portland Volunteer Network, a
member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxillary, and a
volunteer for the Center for Cultural
Exchange.

Jeff Ryan is the
founder of Harrington Writers, a freelance
writing business that specializes in direct
mail, online communications, and brand
management. Prior to that, Mr. Ryan spent 4
years at The VIA Group, a Portland, Maine-based
communications firm. Earlier, he worked for 19
years at L.L. Bean in the Creative Department,
rising to become the Senior Writer for all
corporate editorials and the point person for
the development and refinement of the company’s
various catalog strategies. A Maine native, Mr.
Ryan resides in South Portland. He brings an
extensive knowledge of trails and a heart felt
commitment to preserve open space to the SPLT.
Mr. Ryan has logged over 10,000 miles
backpacking and day hiking on trails throughout
North America as well as New Zealand, and
understands the importance of establishing and
maintaining trails in urban as well as rural
environs.

Carter Scott
recently moved to Maine from Vermont and works
with Evergreen Partners Housing, a South
Portland based affordable housing preservation
company. Carter graduated from Vermont Law
School in 2006 and is a member of the Maine Bar
Association, but is not currently practicing
law. She moved to Maine last year and more
recently to South Portland.

Helen Slocum is
currently employed as a Sr. Technical Analyst ay
Wright Express. While living in Boston, she was
employed by Boston Urban Gardeners as a
Financial Analyst for a year. She was a member
of their board for 6 years. Ms. Slocum has also
worked with several non-profit and for-profit
landscaping companies to create community
gardens and preserve and clean up open spaces.
During her 3 years in Windham, Vermont she was a
Windham County Regional Commissioner and served
on the Natural Resources Committee. Ms. Slocum
attended the University of Southern Maine and
Boston University and has a BS in Accounting.
Helen grew up in South Portland, is an avid
gardener and very interested in preserving open
spaces in South Portland.
Bill Sutton

Bill Sutton has taught government and history at
Southern Maine Community College for over 20
years, and currently is the Chair of the Social
Science Department. Through his employment at
SMCC, Bill has had a long-term connection with
South Portland, but only became a resident two
years ago. Prior to that, Bill lived in
Standish for 25 years where he served on the
Planning Board from 1987-97. He served on a
number of other Town boards and committees,
including the Comprehensive Planning Committee
and most recently as a member of the Tax
Assessment Review Board. In addition to
teaching at SMCC, Bill also works part time as a
residential real estate appraiser. Born and
raised in the Midwest, Bill got his B.A. from
Earlham College in Indiana and finished his
graduate studies at the University of
Cincinnati. He looks forward to being involved
in the South Portland community as a board
member of the SPLT.
Jeremy Wherren

Jeremy Wherren is a Certified Hazardous
Materials Manager (CHMM) with nearly ten years
professional experience in environmental and
occupational safety management. He attended
Southern Community College (then SMTC) and the
University of Southern Maine to receive a B.A.
in Environmental Science and Policy and holds an
M.S. in Business from Husson College. Mr.
Wherren also served four years in the U.S. Coast
Guard including duty on the former USCGC Spar in
South Portland. He was born in Portsmouth, New
Hampshire, and grew up in Ellsworth, Maine. He
and his family have resided in South Portland
since 1996. Mr. Wherren is an advocate for
responsible community planning, meaning that
development should be planned and implemented
with highly weighted goals of open space
preservation and resource sustainability to
successfully maintain and improve the
urban-ecological balance for our community. He
joined the SPLT board in August 2008, and is
excited to help with future SPLT endeavors.
